Road Map To Germany for Malaysian




If I recalled, there were many documentation back then.

The first step, once you have been informed that the employer has already submitted your work application to the government of Germany, you first need to decide whether the family is accompany and plan to stay with you in Germany. It will be critical if your departure date will be decided in the last minute. 

To work and live in Germany, you need a temporary work permit that last for 3 months, which basically a visa/visum that stick in your passport. The work permit takes 2-3 months to approve. However, application of visa to work in Germany need to be applied separately by you and family (if any).

Before applying the Work Visa

1. You may need to Wisma Putra (Foreign Affairs) at Putrajaya to legalize your marriage certificate and birth certificate for your children. The legalization process will be processing at the counter and within 30 minutes you should get the stamp behind your documents. There is no need to go to JAKIM to validate your marriage certificate. All done in one place.

2. Once your documents has been legalized, you need to translate all documentation in     German language and this could only be done by the translation company appointed by the employer or the government. Please check the details for typo error because of the copy&paste thingy. The charges quite substantial per page!

3. The German embassy will then need to endorse or validate the translation. It can be done in one day, sometimes 2 days. The collection of the documents can be assigned to representAll documentation may need to submit back to your employer.


Going to the Embassy


As always, most of the time it will be up and down at German Embassy at Menara Tan & Tan, Kuala Lumpur. Kindly take note this building does not have any photocopy service or ATM machine facility. What they have just a small cafe on the ground floor. For any walk-in transaction with the German Embassy, please come by 8.30am since the submission counter closed at 12 noon. However, due to numbers of applicants, usually by 10am the security control at the Embassy will not allow you to go in unless for visa collection.

Work Visa / Residence Permit Application

1. Do not wait until to the last minute! because your work visa cum residence permit will take 2 weeks to approve. There are chances that supporting document is not suffice and you may need to come more often for supporting documents.
    Open the embassy page and download the visa application form
    All supporting documents must attached in 2 copies, including photo etc.
    Keep in mind that the passport photo for Germany is different in size and color.

2. Family members visa approval will take 4-5 weeks to approval. So if you apply a few 
    weeks before, the family members may need to go as tourist and come back after 4 
    weeks to collect the visa. So plan it well! 

3. Be prepared to bring small notes. The closest ATM is at the nearby Petron station. The 
    charges for visa application may not be the same as published on their website.

4. You may submit the application before the employer sends the ZUV letter which required 
    by the embassy. You may inform that it is work-in-progress. It must be submitted once 
    you received it from the employer.

5. At the point of submission you must be able to establish your apartment/house address. It's either your employer provides the address or you propose to them depending on your contracts.

6. For family members it is compulsory to take a German class before the visa application. 
    However, if your spouse is a university graduates, it can be exempted subject that the 
    employer provides language class in Germany. It has to be specified in the contract.

7. Collection of the visa must be done by the applicants.
